About Your Trainer
I have been involved in athletics all my life and it's made a big impact on my life. Playing team sports taught me how to work with others, to share in a victory or a defeat, to learn from my mistakes, and to make sacrifices for the good of the group. Continuing to stay active in sports as I moved into adulthood gave me a variety of benefits. It worked as an outlet for frustration and a method of stress relief, a way to feed my competitive nature, an opportunity to meet new people, and a reason to feel good about myself. Helping others to feel good about themselves was the reason that I decided to pursue health and fitness as a career. Recognizing the metaphors that translate from sports and athletics to everyday life can create a powerful means to achieving any goals that you set for yourself.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences from the University of Florida (go Gators!). My coursework included anatomy and physiology, human nutrition, motor development, physical fitness assessment, personal fitness teaching methods, sport psychology, and acting for non-majors (it was fun, but didn't actually contribute to my degree program). This degree is an intensive study into how the body functions and how it responds to exercise. It means I have the background to understand not just how to perform exercises, but WHY they will or will not help an individual reach their goals.
I have been certified by the American Council on Exercise as a Personal Trainer since 1998. This certification requires continuing education in the field of health and fitness to maintain my credentials and allows me to stay current on new research findings and teaching methods. It gives me a very large network of professionals in the field and a great number of resources.
I've always had the desire to be my own boss. So, in trying to figure out what type of business I wanted to have, I thought about the types of things that have brought me the most joy in my life. I love people...meeting new people, having fun with people, helping people, teaching people, motivating people. People energize and inspire me! And I have also always been excited by exercise and sports...working out at the gym, taking an aerobics class, running in a 5k, being part of a team, the satisfaction of a goal achieved, and the positive feelings about myself that being fit and healthy creates.
It was my desire to combine the things I love and to make an impact on people's lives that led me to start a fitness based business. It's not just that I wanted to create it, but I felt that I HAD to, I needed to, and I owed it to myself and to all the people out there who want help achieving their fitness goals. This is where my personal joy is, and I want to share it so that I can help you create that kind of joy in your own life.
